The Helsinki City Museum is located right in the city centre, at the corner of Senate Square. Since its opening, it has been one of the most popular museums in Finland. The museum offers a diverse range of exhibitions aimed at different audiences. Children’s Town has been designed with the needs and wishes of families with children in mind.
A new main exhibition on the second floor will open on Helsinki Day, 12 June 2026. It presents, in a colourful and surprising way, life on the shore of a northern sea between East and West, showcasing the key turning points and phenomena that have shaped Helsinki into the city it is today. The museum’s temporary exhibitions highlight alternative perspectives on the city’s history and enrich our understanding of the past. The Tuntematon lähiö (Unknown Suburb) exhibition, offering a touch of suburban romance, will open on 17 April 2026.
The Helsinki City Museum aims to offer visitors an unforgettable museum experience. In addition to engaging content, we have focused on the quality of our customer service and the comfort of all visitor areas. The museum also features a museum shop and the café El Fant. Free admission lowers the threshold for Helsinki residents to visit the museum — and to return again. The museum also encourages residents to take part in planning exhibitions and other content.
