Climb aboard the historic Submarine Vesikko and experience what life would have been like on board during the war years
Climb on board the historic Submarine Vesikko to get a sense of what cramped and crowded life was like on board this submarine when it operated in the Finnish navy during the wars of 1939-44. Having undergone significant restoration, it's one of the museum's most impressive historic artefacts that you can experience.
One of the most popular attractions on Suomenlinna, the restored submarine was originally one of five submarines to serve in the Finnish Navy. Having seen service during the Winter War, Second World War and the Continuation War, Vesikko operated in convoy, safety and patrol duties and successfully sank the Soviet merchant ship Vyborg; her only victory. After the Paris Peace Treaty in 1947, Finland's submarines were scrapped with the exception of Vesikko, which was restored as a museum and opened to the public in 1973!
