Did you know:

  • Helsinki was originally a trading town, founded by King Gustav I of Sweden in 1550
  • Helsinki became the capital of Finland in the year 1812, when Czar Alexander I of Russia replaced it with Turku in order to reduce Swedish impact
  • Alvar Aalto was the architect behind some of the most impressive buildings in the city, including Finlandia Hall

Things to see:

Helsinki has a fascinating history from its founding under Swedish rule, then passing through the Russian and finally into Finnish, so it's no surprise you can see influences of the different styles and eras through the architecture in the historic centre from neo-classical in the 18th century - many of the buildings are compared to those in St. Petersburg, old Leningrad and Moscow - to Art Nouveau in the 1900s, inspired by Kalevala, and Classicism of the 1920a.

Wander through the cobbled streets of Market Square and Senate Square in the Tori Quarter, or relax along Töölö Bay, where you'll find the Opera House. Marvel at the impressive Parliament buildings and the contrast in style between that and Finlandia Hall, proving Helsinki to be a beautiful blend of history through the ages.

A bus tour is the best way to get a feel for this cosy but cosmopolitan city, so enjoy the multiple attractions and landmarks along the route and get acquainted with Helsinki the easy way.
